“Don’t Kevin Costner me. You know what that does.”

Sarah

JACE

“Sarah?” I whispered into the dark room.

“What’s wrong?” I heard her moving on the cot by the wall, and in just a second she was up beside my bed, her concerned face close to mine. “Are you okay? What do you need? Should I…”

I sighed. “I didn’t mean to scare you, I just wondered if you were awake.”

“Oh.” She blew out a breath. “Good. Okay. Yes, I was awake.”

“What day is it?”

“You’ve been in this room for three days now.”

“Okay, so it’s the same day. I didn’t know how long I’d slept. I barely got to say a word to you today,” I told her. “I wanted to talk to you but there was always someone here or I was asleep.”

“They gave you that shot after your little jaunt down the hall,” Sarah said sarcastically. “You said plenty then.”

“Shit, I forgot about that. I just wanted to get some air.” I tried to take a deep breath and was happy that it seemed deeper than the ones I’d been able to take just this morning. “That was yesterday, right? What did I say?”

“No, honey, it was day three. It’s still day three, but it’s nighttime now. As far as what you said this time - well, Martha, Smokey, Sandra, Tink, and a few others now know that I have a birthmark that’s about the size of an M&M.” Sarah made quote marks with her fingers and continued. “Perched right there, perfectly, above the crack of my ass.”

“Oh.”

“You also told Tink about the time you stole his truck, picked up the Morrison twins, and took them out to drink his beer in the country when you were 14, how you broke Sandra’s serving bowl that matched her good dishes, and that you were the one who clogged the toilet that flooded Martha’s guest bathroom when they still lived in the house by yours.”

“Oh.”

“Then you spilled the details about the time that you, your brothers, all four Forrester boys, Lout, and Sonny dropped eight packages of stink bombs into the vents of the middle school to make them postpone school because Bird was too busy getting laid by, and I quote, ‘that skank-ho Trisha’ to get his term paper done and he was going to fail his English class.”

“Shit,” I hissed. “I’ve got to get them to stop giving me all the drugs.”

“You’ve got to stop pushing yourself so hard that you need all the drugs.”

“I just wanted some air. I’m going stir crazy in here.”

“I’m trying to keep your mind off things, but I know there’s only so many board games a person can play before they just lose it.”

“I’m just not used to being still. I don’t go anywhere so it seems like the days are running together. What else did I say? I know there’s more.”

“Jenna let you down easy when you told her that you’d pretend to think she’s sexy so Fain will get off his ass and do something. You also offered to kiss her with tongue even though the thought of it made you want to puke.
